About Late Sri Bhavanam Venkatram
Sri Bhavanam Venkatram was born on 18 July 1931 in Muppala village in Guntur district. He started his political career as a youth activist and went on to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Sri Venkatram always strived to create a world that provides opportunity, fairness and dignity. Such was his far-thinking that many of his ideas which were found to be deeply eccentric at the time have today become the very fabric of our public life. In a country like India whose social structure was dictated by castes, he strongly advocated a caste-less society and dropped “Reddy” from his name. His commitment to social justice and upliftment of farmers and poor was evident in the way he carried out programmes that strengthened democratic values, reduced poverty and injustice, promoted cooperation for better farming, and lent voice to those who are not heard, counted or represented.
He became the Minister for Education in the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1978. He was sworn in as the 9th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on February 24, 1982 and served the state until September 19, 1982. Among the many firsts that he introduced, it was establishing the first Open University in India that won him several accolades. Sri Nara Chandra Babu Naidu and Late Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy were his ministerial colleagues. Sri Venkatram passed away on the 6th of April 2002.
