24-Hour Holter Monitoring

A Holter monitor is an instrument that unceasingly records the rhythms of the heart. It is generally worn for 24 - 48 hours during normal activity. The process involves electrodes (small conducting patches) fixed onto the patient’s chest and attached to a small recording monitor. The battery operated Holter monitor is portable and can be carried in a pocket or small pouch worn around the neck or waist. It is important that a diary of activities is maintained during the time monitor is worn. The cardiologist will check the records and see if there are irregularities in the heart rhythms. Holter monitoring is a very valuable tool to assess and diagnose a range of symptoms, like palpitations, dizziness and cardiac arrhythmia. No special preparation is needed.
