Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary angioplasty is a method where narrowed and blocked coronary arteries are broadened by using a balloon and a stent attached to a catheter. A catheter is a thin, flexible tube which is introduced into a coronary artery. The balloon at the edge of the catheter is blown up at the narrowed section of artery to make it wider and a stent (small tube) is left in its place to keep the artery widened. The treatment usually requires hospitalization for about 2- 3 days. Prior to discharge the cardiologist will explain the results to the patient and suggest on future course of medication.
