Interstitial Lung Diseases

A group of lung diseases (over 180 lung disorders) affecting the interstitium (the tissue and space around the air sacs of the lungs) is called interstitial lung disease (ILD).  ILD is a term used to distinguish these diseases from obstructive airways diseases.

Common symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness, loss of appetite, loss of weight, dry cough without phlegm, discomfort in chest, laboured breathing etc.

    • Spirometry +Transfer factor
  • Peak flow monitoring (PFM)
  • Blood tests
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Bronchoalveolar lavage
  • CT or CAT scan
  • Chest x-rays
  • Lung biopsy in patients who required

Treatments may include:

  • Influenza vaccine
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine
  • Oral medications
  • Physical Lung Exercises
  • Oxygen Supplementation if necessary
